U2, the Bible, and the Music of Surrender

U2 is a post-punk band formed in Dublin, Ireland, in 1976 and includes Bono, Adam Clayton, the Edge, and Larry Mullen. They have won 22 Grammy Awards, more than any other band, and in 2005, U2 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The music of U2 reflects the spirituality of its members. With over 50 biblical references in their lyrics, their songs suggest poetry informed by the Christian faith. Bono once declared,

  • “I believe that Jesus was … the Son of God … The point of the death of Christ is that Christ took on the sins of the world, so that what we put out did not come back to us, and that our sinful nature does not reap the obvious death …It’s not our own good works that get us through the gates of heaven.”

Starting Monday, January 9 at 7 PM, Rev. Sara Hodsden will lead a four-week exploration of the music of U2 and the Bible via Zoom. If you want links and passwords for this Zoom meeting, please contact jhodsden@firstpresbyterian.net. Sara Hodsden is the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Huron, Ohio.

WHAT IS BIBLE BANTER?

Join us on Monday evenings at 7 PM for "Bible Banter" a virtual small group of the First Presbyterian Church of Norwalk, Ohio.

We are a small but fearless group. The conversation is wide-ranging, and we are never afraid to ask questions. Occasionally, we will use a prepared curriculum, but more often, just bring your Bible. We will explore the Bible verse-by-verse. This group is open to anyone from anywhere. Please drop us an email at jhodsden@firstpresbyterian.net to let us know you are coming.
